What it is like
South Riverdale — Leslieville to nearly everyone who lives there — is a mix of narrow Victorian and Edwardian rows, postwar infill and a growing number of mid-rise condominiums along the eastern avenues. Lot frontages are famously tight, which makes the ones that are not tight command a premium. The northern edge toward Gerrard is quieter and more residential; the southern edge toward Lake Shore is industrial land in transition.
Getting around
The 501 Queen and 506 Carlton streetcars cross the neighbourhood, and the 72 Pape bus runs north to Line 2. The Ontario Line is under construction with stations planned at Leslieville and Gerrard, which is the single largest change coming to the area and is already visible in what gets built near the alignment.
Things to see and do
Jimmie Simpson Park and its recreation centre anchor the west end; Greenwood Park has an outdoor rink and pool. The Leslie Street Spit — Tommy Thompson Park — is a five-kilometre artificial headland into the lake, open on weekends and one of the better bird-watching sites in the region. Ashbridges Bay is at the eastern edge.
Shops, restaurants and work
Queen Street East from the Don River to Coxwell is the commercial heart, with a second cluster along Gerrard. The area is also home to several film and television studios, which is why you will occasionally find a street closed for a shoot.
