What it is like
Unionville is a historic village absorbed into Markham, and the contrast is the point: a heritage main street of clapboard shopfronts at the centre, surrounded by planned subdivisions from the 1980s onward and, more recently, condominium blocks near Highway 7. Housing is mostly detached and townhouse, and the school catchments are a significant part of what people pay for here.
Getting around
Unionville GO on the Stouffville line runs to Union. The VIVA bus rapid transit corridor along Highway 7 connects west to Richmond Hill and Vaughan and east to Markham, and Highways 407 and 404 are both close. It remains a car-first area outside the GO commute.
Things to see and do
Main Street Unionville is the draw — a preserved streetscape of nineteenth-century buildings running down to Toogood Pond, which has a walking loop and is the site of the summer festival. The Varley Art Gallery sits on Main Street; the Flato Markham Theatre and Markham Civic Centre are minutes away. Rouge National Urban Park is to the east.
Shops, restaurants and work
Main Street is independent retail, restaurants and galleries in heritage buildings. The Highway 7 corridor and Markville area provide the everyday shopping, and the Markham technology employers along Highway 404 are a short drive.
