What it is like
Overwhelmingly condominium, and unusually skewed to smaller units, because the buyers and renters are disproportionately students, medical staff and finance workers who chose the area for the walk. The strip runs from around Queen up to Bloor, taking in Bay, University and the streets between. Older towers from the 1970s and 1980s sit beside very new ones, and the age of the building is usually the strongest single predictor of both fee and layout.
Getting around
Line 1 curves through the area with stations at Osgoode, St Patrick, Queen’s Park and Museum on the University side and Queen, Dundas and College on the Yonge side, so almost every address is within a few minutes of a subway entrance. The 506 Carlton and 505 Dundas streetcars cross east-west. Union Station, and with it every GO line, is a short ride or a twenty-minute walk south.
Things to see and do
Nathan Phillips Square in front of New City Hall holds the skating rink and the sign everyone photographs; Osgoode Hall and Queen’s Park are both a short walk. The Art Gallery of Ontario is on Dundas West, the Royal Ontario Museum at Bloor and Queen’s Park, and the University of Toronto’s St George campus occupies much of the west side. Kensington Market and Chinatown are immediately west.
Shops, restaurants and work
This is the hospital and university employment core — Toronto General, Mount Sinai, SickKids and Princess Margaret are all on University Avenue — with the Financial District at the south end. Retail is concentrated in the PATH system underground and along Bay, and the Eaton Centre is at the southeast corner.
