What it is like
A small, deliberately planned neighbourhood laid out in the 1950s on land that had been the Henry family farm, with curving streets, mature trees and no through traffic. The houses are detached, generally larger than their Don Mills contemporaries, and increasingly rebuilt. Around the edges — along Sheppard and Don Mills Road — the form changes entirely into condominium towers, which is where most of the area’s listings are.
Getting around
Don Mills station is the eastern terminus of Line 4 Sheppard, three stops from the Line 1 interchange at Sheppard-Yonge, and the station is built into the Fairview Mall site. It is also the terminus for several York Region VIVA and TTC express routes. Highway 401 and the Don Valley Parkway meet immediately south, which is either the area’s greatest convenience or its defining noise problem depending on the street.
Things to see and do
The Betty Sutherland Trail follows the East Don River through the ravine on the western edge and connects into the wider valley trail network. Fairview Mall is the retail and civic anchor, with the district library branch inside it. Edwards Gardens and the Toronto Botanical Garden are a short drive south.
Shops, restaurants and work
Fairview Mall carries the shopping. The office cluster along Sheppard and Consumers Road is a substantial employment node in its own right, and the 401 and the Parkway put Downsview, Markham and downtown all within a reasonable drive.
