The Blue Mountains
Ontario’s largest ski resort, the villages around it, and an escarpment that puts a hard limit on where anything can be built.

Homes for sale in The Blue Mountains
388 on the market now — each with its school boundaries, sale history and what comparable homes actually sold for.
What it is like
A municipality rather than a single settlement: the resort and its village, the older communities of Thornbury and Clarksburg, and a great deal of rural and shoreline property between them. Housing runs from chalets and resort condominiums at the hill to century houses in Thornbury and large rural properties along the escarpment. The Niagara Escarpment Plan constrains development across much of the municipality, which is why supply is tighter here than the land area suggests and why what can be built where is a question worth asking early.
Getting around
Effectively none — this is a driving municipality. Highway 26 runs along the shore between Collingwood and Meaford, and the drive from Toronto is around two hours. Seasonal shuttles serve the resort, and Colltrans connects to Collingwood.
Things to see and do
Blue Mountain Resort has the province’s largest ski operation and a pedestrian village that stays busy in summer on mountain biking, the gondola and the ropes courses. Scenic Caves and the Bruce Trail run along the escarpment. Thornbury has the harbour and the fish ladder on the Beaver River, and the apple orchards along the shore are a working agricultural landscape rather than a backdrop.
Shops, restaurants and work
The resort village carries most of the retail and restaurants, with Thornbury’s Bruce Street the alternative and the more local one. Employment is overwhelmingly tourism and hospitality, seasonal at both ends of the year, with construction and trades as the other major employer.
