What it is like
A mix of tall condominium towers, converted and purpose-built rentals, and pockets of Victorian housing on the side streets east of Church. The area covers Toronto Metropolitan University and the Church-Wellesley Village, so the resident population skews younger and more transient than the city average, and investor ownership is high. Buildings vary widely in age and quality within a single block, which makes the specific address matter far more than the postal code.
Getting around
Line 1 runs under Yonge with stations at Dundas, College and Wellesley; Line 2 crosses at Bloor-Yonge. The 501 Queen and 505 Dundas streetcars cross east-west. This is among the best-connected residential areas in the city, and a car is genuinely optional — which is reflected in parking being unbundled or absent in many buildings.
Things to see and do
Yonge-Dundas Square anchors the south end, with the Eaton Centre across the street and the Ed Mirvish and Elgin theatres a short walk away. Maple Leaf Gardens, the Leafs’ home until 1999, is now a Loblaws below and Toronto Metropolitan University’s athletic centre above, with the original arena structure visible inside. Allan Gardens holds the Victorian conservatory, and Barbara Hall Park and the Village along Church Street are the centre of the city’s LGBTQ+ community.
Shops, restaurants and work
Yonge Street is continuous retail, and Church Street carries the restaurant and bar strip. Everyday shopping is well served, with grocery at Maple Leaf Gardens and Church and Carlton. The hospital district and the Financial District are both within walking distance, which is the main employment draw.
