What it is like
Don Mills was built from 1952 as the country’s first fully planned suburb: neighbourhood units around a central shopping centre, curving streets, ravines left as green space, and modernist architecture that was unusual for its time and is now sought after. The original housing is detached and semi-detached on large lots, much of it renovated or replaced. Banbury to the north is larger and more expensive again. Towers and townhouses cluster around Don Mills and Eglinton and around the Shops at Don Mills.
Getting around
Line 5 Eglinton opened on 8 February 2026 and runs beneath Eglinton Avenue with stations serving the southern edge of the area, which connects Don Mills directly westward to Yonge and eastward to Kennedy without a car for the first time. The Don Valley Parkway is immediately west and Highway 401 north, so this remains a strong driving location as well. Bus routes along Don Mills Road connect north to Sheppard and Line 4.
Things to see and do
The Aga Khan Museum and its formal gardens sit on Wynford Drive, beside the Ismaili Centre — the museum holds one of the most significant collections of Islamic art in North America and is the area’s cultural landmark. Edwards Gardens and the Toronto Botanical Garden are at Lawrence and Leslie, connecting into the Wilket Creek ravine trail. The Ontario Science Centre building stands on Don Mills Road, though it closed to the public in 2024.
Shops, restaurants and work
The Shops at Don Mills replaced the original 1955 shopping centre with an open-air main-street format and is the retail and restaurant centre. Office employment is concentrated along Wynford and Don Mills Road, and the Eglinton corridor is expected to intensify further now that Line 5 is running.
